Show Me, Guide Me, Test Me..
Every learner has the same goal…to get the most out of Training…the most “Bang for your Buck!” I not only want learners and users of my ELearning modules to read the text on the screen and pass the assessments, but I also want them to try it on their own in a simulated environment. This is why we at Graphik Connexions use the Show Me, Guide Me, Test Me method in our ELearning modules. The Show Me section shows the user how to complete a task; the Guide Me section guides the user through the task with hints and step by step instructions; and the Test Me section has the user complete the task with no hints or textual instructions.

Keep in mind this type of structure can be completed for technology training and soft skills training respectively. Soft skills training usually uses Role Playing exercises in the Show Me, Guide Me, Test Me sections. These include real life scenarios, such as sales rep to sales prospects or a customer service rep to a customer. Check out some of our new Flash demo samples at www.graphikconnexions.com/portfolio.htm.

Additional assessments can be added at the end of the module as well, such as Multiple Choice, True/False, Matching, Drag and Drop and more. Which leads us into our next topic of measuring learning. We can measure our learning with assessments only, interactive activities, demos only or ‘basic question’ testing. One of the newest Flash applications out there for this purpose is Raptivity. You can check out the link at www.Raptivity.com and click the Interactivity Samples button. This application not only offers the basic interactivity but even more advanced options such as games, mazes, puzzles, diagrams, and more.

Be sure whoever you hire to complete your ELearning development, you receive a wide selection of interaction and assessments. It will not only keep learners more engaged, but also allow you to record how well the learner is retaining the ELearning content. Each interaction and assessment can be scored and graded on a set percentage or Pass/Fail scale.

In our next follow up article we will discuss ELearning module Certification. We will define the options for Certification, the pros and cons, and how to set it up in your Training. Until then…

Traditional Training vs Elearning Solutions: Which is more Cost Effective
In a period of financial difficulty, such as the one being experienced by the entire world right now, the key to survival of most companies is in seeking out solutions with the maximum of benefits with the least of loss from the company itself.  This usually translates into sourcing out resources that is projected to yield the most in terms of results for the company, without the company having to shell out too much to acquire it or accrue a large expense in the production of the favorable results.  For some companies, this would necessarily mean downsizing their existing workforce and retaining only those that are particularly indispensable, or those who are able to function in multiple capacities, so as to preclude any slowing in production and operations, even if the workforce has been cut in half in number.  There companies, however, that frown upon this practice, and see the massive laying off of employees as not only unjust but also a very unwise move on the part of management, since the greatest resource of the company is being compromised in removing such a large portion of the work force, namely the employees themselves.  While these forward-thinking companies do acknowledge the need to stem the bleeding of finances of the company by removing employees deemed as redundant, they will all agree that the general scale that is practiced during such massive lay offs is simply too much.  What is needed is to identify the tasks that can still be efficiently be performed by certain members of the workforce, and then put into effect a re-evaluation of the number of the work force that really needs to be retained, and how much of the employees is a realistic figure to let go off.  The process, however, should not stop there.  The remaining number of the workforce should be trained to ensure that their skills are indeed of a quality to allow the company to deal with the crisis.  This is where e-learning solutions come in, to compliment the training to be given to the workforce.

e-Learning solutions provide an ideal training implement to the training of the remaining members of the work force, since there is a marked difference in the expense of using e-learning solutions and sourcing out individuals or institutions that offer corporate training courses on fields of study or skills upgrade that is related to the needs of the company.  While there may be a standing argument as to the cost-effectiveness of using e-learning tools versus that of a traditional training scenario where a classroom setting is used, to facilitate the supposed “learning atmosphere”, there is the serious matter of cost and time versus acceptable loss ratio factor for the companies that are in dire need of a solution to their sagging output result and revenue situation.  One of the winning aspects of this argument is the fact that compared to the traditional classroom setting, a learning management system has been proven to take up significantly less time to accomplish the desired learning exercise, and in companies that put a premium in maximizing the output of the workforce in terms of man hours, this aspect is definitely something which is quite favorable.
